During Xmas Eve night, a polar low approached northern Scotland and this gave the severest weather for the month.
There were severe blizzards and gales with drifting snow. The Shetlands was worst hit with depth of level snow at 35cm
and drifts well in excess of this. A state of emergency was declared on the Islands.

I mind that night well, me and my partner at the time were meant to be going up to my folks in Brae for Christmas so hadnt bought much food in apart from party nibbles for the house. My mum had called on Christmas eve to tell me to head up now as there was snow coming - did i listen? I opened my front door on Christmas morning and the snow was half way up the door. I had put the cats out the night before and was worried for them, when i called on them i could hear faint meows then i realised they were snowed in to their cat box, I dug them out - they were delighted! That year Christmas dinner consisted of twiglets, mint matchmakers, crisps and beer. As the Tv and electricity was off and there was no hope of any visitors so me and my boyfriend played strip poker which keep us warm too! I lived in Nesting at the time and there seemed no hope of getting out for days. After day 3 I was determined to get out, plus I had run out of fags so off we set with cats in tow. After eventually managing to reach the Nesting junction the road resembled a toboggan run with a single track running through large snow verges on either side. When we met another snow survivor on the track the waves and smiles were huge and we felt a certain kind of comradery with them. We eventually had our Christmas Dinner which tasted more delicious than ever and after we headed to the Mid Brae for a fantasic night as everyone was out to have a great time. It was one of the best Christmases yet as it was so different and with the snow so magical.
