Both these incidents were fuelled by excessive use of alcohol and Shetland Police would like to urge the public to drink sensibly and responsibly.

In response to concerns being raised by members of the public regarding excess speeding within the 30 mph zone of Veensgarth , Tingwall. Police carried out proactive speed checks on the morning of Tuesday 3rd May 2011 with the following offences detected.

A 21 year old male person was detected driving at 57 mph in a 30 mph limit and is to be reported to the Procurator Fiscal for speeding and dangerous driving. There were also a number of fixed penalties issued to drivers for exceeding the 30 mph speed limit.

It is disappointing to note that after numerous warnings from the Police regarding road traffic matters including speeding drivers still continue to drive at excessive speed on Shetland roads. We would again like to take this opportunity to advise motorists that statistics show that accidents are more likely to occur on rural roads and as such they should drive at appropriate speeds taking into consideration the weather and other contributing factors.Police will continue to respond proactively to the concerns and issues raised by our local communities in this and other matters.

Shetland Police would like to highlight two acts of senseless vandalism which took place last weekend and appeal to the community to contact them with any information they may have regarding these incidents. Firstly between Thursday 28th April and Monday 2nd May 2011, damage was caused to windows at Montfield Hospital, Lerwick. The second incident occurred at public toilets at Meal Beach, Hamnavoe, Shetland, whereby extensive damage was caused within. This took place sometime between Friday 29th May and Monday 2nd May 2011. Police are aware that the area was very busy over the weekend, given the weather conditions and would ask for anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity during that time, to please contact them. Both premises which suffered the damage offer facilities and services to the Shetland communities and targeting them ultimately only harms the communities themselves. Whilst Shetland police will make every effort to trace those responsible, they do require the support and assistance of the public and again anyone with information is asked to come forward to help - Tel 01595692110.

Dogs Against Drugs additional funding

Shetland Charity Dogs Against Drugs have secured extra funding for an additional dog handler and drug detection dog to be available in Shetland. This will add to the current dog handler and two drugs dogs the island based charity has at the moment.

Shetland Area Commander Chief Inspector David Bushell said, “This is excellent news in that we will have access to even more of a resource to detect drugs that come into Shetland. The Dogs Against Drugs charity have done very well to secure this extra funding from Petrofac. Shetland has a higher level of drug activity than other areas of Northern Constabulary and the drugs dogs are used constantly to help us tackle this. We have had recent success in preventing major supply’s of drugs coming to the islands and the drugs dogs are often centre of our policing operations to find drugs.”

A Police Awards Ceremony was held  (19/04/11) at the Clickimin Centre, Lerwick, Shetland to mark long service by two Shetland Police Officers and recognise good work by other officers.

Shetland Area Commander Chief Inspector David Bushell handed out Long Service Medals to two Shetland Police Officers today. Sergeant Gordon Fowler who joined Northern Constabulary on 12th May 1990 and Constable Ewan MacLeod who joined the force on 7th September 1989 both received Long Service Medals which recognise 20 years police service.

Chief Inspector Bushell said, "It is a pleasure to hand out these two long service medals. The medals both Sergeant Fowler and Constable MacLeod have received signify service and commitment that they have given to communities across the Northern Constabulary area over the past 20 plus years. Being a police officer is far more than just a job as officers put themselves at danger, are always 'on duty', work all sorts of unsociable hours and commit themselves to making communities better. In handing out these medals it is also important to recognise and thank officer’s families who support and give so much over the years."

Chief Inspector Bushell also presented a Superintendents Commendation to Detective Constable Martin Murphy for his diligence, dedication and professional approach displayed when he was involved in the detection of a large drugs importation case in Shetland during 2010.
Chief Inspector Bushell said, " Detective Constable Murphy displayed excellent detective skills in detecting a male who brought a large quantity of drugs into Shetland in 2010. The officers actions resulted in drugs not going onto the street in Shetland and disrupted a main supply of drugs to the area.
Constable Ronnie Mackenzie, Victoria Duthie, Jonathan Mustard and Special Constable James Spence were also awarded an Area Commanders Commendation by Chief Inspector Bushell following the rescue of a man from the harbour in Lerwick in June 2010.

Chief Inspector Bushell said, " These officers were on duty last June in the early hours of the morning when they were alerted to a man who had fallen into the harbour. Together with a member of the public the officers worked as a team to rescue him from the water. This involved getting a floatation device to him then climbing over moored boats and pulling him out of the water with a rope. The man was treated by ambulance but had no lasting injury. This was a life threatening situation where the officers acted with bravery and used initiative to rescue the man."
